Public Health Nutrition
These days it has been recorded that the number of obese children has been increasing at an alarming rate. The easy availability of fast food, microwave dinners and meals on-the-go has made people, mostly from younger generations, very unenthusiastic about sitting around and waiting for boring home-cooked food.
Although it is well known that there is no better food than food made at home, kids just do not like their parents telling them, and sometimes forcing them, to eat their vegetables. Children much rather eat hamburgers, french fries, hotdogs and pizzas. On the other hand who can blame them? A pizza tastes much better than broccoli and brussels sprouts. However, almost every kid, and most parents, are unaware exactly how unhealthy junk food is for them.
To remedy this, public health nutrition was introduced. Public health nutrition focuses on the promotion of good health through people’s daily nutrition cycles. It is a program which has the primary goal of making information about good and bad food available to the general public without them having to consult a doctor and pay more just to find out what is good for a person’s body.
Another aspect of eating healthy foods that many people do not realize is that it will significantly reduce the number of times a person gets affected by illness. A healthy body is better equipped to fight off infection and germs and can withstand the effects of the natural environment. Furthermore, once someone falls ill, the healthier they are dictates their recovery time to a certain extent.
Public health nutrition has been very effective in making people aware of just what risks they are running when they choose to live unhealthy lives. Many people think that you can only get the perfect body through rigorous exercise, but what they fail to realize is that a well balanced, nutritious diet is also essential. A good diet also allows people to control other aspects of their health. Many diabetics have found that it is not essential for them to be on insulin if they can control their blood sugar. The easiest way to control one’s blood sugar is through your diet.
However, the age-old notion that health food just does not taste good still prevails. This is one deciding factor when it comes to children. Does public health nutrition solve this problem? The answer is yes. Through experimentation and a good understanding of ingredients, public health nutrition experts have found new recipes that will provide people with a tasty, and extremely nutritious meal. The mixing of a lot of fruit with vegetables that are high in vitamins has created tasty drinks like Vitamin Water and V8.
Furthermore public health nutrition has also had an effect on the fast food industry. Due to public awareness increasing and people taking a firmer stand on the food they eat, fast food companies have had to change the ingredients they use in the preparation of their food. Leaner sections of meat are being used in burgers and fried chicken and zero trans-fat oils are being used in almost all dishes. New ranges of salads are also being introduced due to the effects of public health nutrition awareness.
